Rehearsal Guide: “The Great Commandment” is a setting of the Gospel passage in
which Jesus tells us to love God and to love one another.  The narrative portion
of the scripture receives a recitative treatment, while the words of Jesus are
sung to a lovely, comforting melody over sustained chords in the lower voices.

Begin by asking the singers to speak the recitative sections in rhythm.  Then
rehearse the voice parts one at a time.  Make sure everyone gets started on the
correct pitch when you put it together.  Let the sopranos learn the melody
beginning at measure 11.  Rehearse the altos, tenor, and basses.  Then combine all
parts.  Emphasize the legato nature of the melodic sections and the rhythmic
quality of the recitative.
